Artist Statement​

My intention as an artist is to exploit my love of learning by exploring that which I do not know. My work is an experiment designed to investigate the corners of my unknown. Beginning with a testable question, I seek answers about the world which surrounds and connects us. In my pieces, I showcase my data and results on the human body. Each piece questions one of my many fascinations. Answers are not the goal of these studies, discovery is. I sometimes showcase personal beliefs and opinions in my pieces. Other times, I am more interested in the beliefs and opinions of others. My work is shaped equally by myself and the performers. Honesty and vulnerability are the threads by which my pieces are woven together. My work is a transparent window into the natural world which surrounds and connects us.

I am currently fascinated by 

  • Emotions

    • The natural arc of emotions for different people

    • How altering a situation changes the emotional expression

    • How human interaction affects the emotional expression

    • The difference between sympathy and empathy; how experience influences empathy

    • The validity of the “four basic emotions” notion

  • Mathematics

    • If math and dance can be integrated in such a way that they are interdependent

    • If there is a mathematical way to express dance

    • The limit to which concrete mathematics can define dance; does artistry come into play

    • How the systematic movement vocabulary of Laban can relate to math

  • Sound

    • The sound of everyday activities and happenings

    • Vocalizations

    • How situations and emotions affect intonation, pitch, and flow

    • Movement guided by the qualities, dynamics, and flow of sounds

    • Music

      • The effect of music on a person’s mood

      • The effect of music on the perception of a dance

      • The effect of music on the dancer’s movement quality

  • Death

    • Why is death feared 

    • Do people react differently to death depending on the level of relation to it

    • Death and the afterlife defined in different religions

    • Is death final

  • Relationships

    • The course of a relationship; different based on type of relationship

    • How past relationships affect current ones

    • Different types of relationships (parasitism, commensalism, mutualism, etc.)

  • Intersection

    • Where exactly does an intersection occur and what defines an intersection?

    • What is the emotional arc from before the intersection to after the intersection completes?

    • What occurs in an intersection?

      • Do ideas transfer from one participant to another?

      • Does one take dominance? Submission? Neutrality?

  • Movement derived from internal impulses

    • Guided Improvisation

      • Based on spatial relations (ie. over, within, beneath)

      • Based on things in nature (ie. lightning, river, wind)

      • Based on situations/emotions (ie. leaving someone, getting asked out)

  • The Five Senses

    • How can dance be seen?

    • How can dance be heard?

    • How can dance be tasted?

    • How can dance be smelled?

    • How can dance be felt?

  • Site Specifics

    • Does the space influence the movement?

    • Does the movement manipulate the space?

    • Does the movement simply live within the space?

  • Showcasing not only my own beliefs/tendencies, but those of the dancers  

  • These fascinations will grow and change throughout the course of my life
